Gabriel Heinze vilified by Manchester United fans for act of 'betrayal' in trying to force move to Liverpool
Gabriel Heinze shared an old team-mates’ embrace with Patrice Evra in the tunnel prior to strolling onto the Stade Velodrome pitch, but they could have been two misbehaving husbands about to sneak back through the front door, awaiting the angry swing of a handbag.
Variety: Gabriel Heinze faced a number of his former Manchester United team-mates as Marseille secured a 0-0 draw against the Premier League leaders Photo: ACTION IMAGES

The two men knew what to expect once they emerged from the steps in the corner of the ground.
Marseille full-back Heinze might have optimistically expressed his hope for a warm reception from the Manchester United supporters who hailed him as a hero before his treacherous attempt to leave for Liverpool in 2007, but
Evra, vilified as the captain of the rebellious French World Cup last summer, had no such misplaced optimism about the reception awaiting him on his first competitive outing in France since the shame of South Africa.
Evra, omitted from the French squad for the friendly against Brazil earlier this month despite serving his five-match suspension for his part in the players’ strike in South Africa, was subjected to piercing jeers from the Marseille supporters whenever he touched the ball.
And Heinze, regularly serenaded with chants of ‘Argentina, Argentina’ at Old Trafford, was taunted with a spiteful rendition of ‘You Scouse B------!’ each time he approached the section housing the 3,500 United fans.
At times, it was two left-backs against the world, but for Heinze at least, that is probably just the way he likes it.
The Argentine’s pre-match admission that his ‘impulsive’ and ‘strong-willed’ nature led him to the acrimonious departure from United in Aug 2007 which he now claims to regret was a rare display of contrition from the 32-year-old. Heinze’s calling card has always been his ferocious competitive streak.
This is the man who shoved a television camera into the face of its operator in South Africa last summer merely because he had collided with it while celebrating an Argentina goal against Mexico.
No wonder Ferguson fought with equal ferocity to prevent Heinze moving to Anfield, a battle the Scotsman won.
Despite their bitter parting, both men spoke warmly of their respect for one another before this game. Ferguson knew that injuries had blunted Heinze’s edge during his three years at United, but the defender’s winning mentality was a prized commodity.
Ferguson’s recollection of Heinze laying down a firm physical marker on his direct opponent at the outset of every fixture was delivered as a compliment and United winger Nani had to wait a mere 14 seconds before being ‘welcomed’ to the game by Heinze with a forceful challenge on the halfway line.
The ageing defender’s questionable position sense and flat-footed movement were the flip-side, however, and Nani benefited from both but was unable to capitalise.
Heinze’s popularity during his three years at Old Trafford was a reflection of the transitional period endured by Ferguson’s for the majority of that time.
Although he was ushered out of the Old Trafford exit door with a Premier League winners’ medal in his pocket earned during the previous season, he had become a fading force at United by that stage, having lost the left-back position to Evra.
It was his first campaign, in 2004-05, when he was voted the club’s Player of the Year by supporters, that embodied Heinze as the spirit of Ferguson’s team when Chelsea’s dominance had relegated United to also-rans.
In good times, flair players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney carry the hopes of fans by sprinkling stardust over silverware, so when an uncompromising left-back emerges as the poster boy, it paints a fairly obvious picture.
During the dark days of Eric Djemba-Djemba and David Bellion, the image of Heinze agriculturally neutralising twinkle-toed wingers was the highlight for most United followers.
Ferguson labelled Heinze as United’s ‘warrior,’ but an ankle injury suffered against Villarreal in Sept 2005 ended his second campaign and visibly blunted his pace when he returned.
The warrior had become a liability. When a defender begins to grapple with forwards and check their runs with shirt tugs and a discreet nudge of the elbow into the ribs, it is often a sure sign of compensation for fading powers.
In contrast to the limitations forced on Heinze by his ankle injury, Evra offered Ferguson athleticism and pace, as well as the tenacity of the South American, so United’s readiness to offload Heinze in the summer of 2007 was hardly a surprise.
His preferred destination was the issue. No player had left Old Trafford for Anfield, or vice versa, since Phil Chisnall in 1964, so by pinning his colours to Liverpool’s mast, Heinze’s actions were viewed as an act of betrayal.
It is one he can expect to be reminded of ay Old Trafford in three weeks’ time.

Clippers guard Eric Gordon has been out of the lineup since Jan. 22, but the team is hoping he'll return to action next week. (Gary A. Vasquez / US Presswire / November 3, 2010)
Mysteries are all well and good … just not in the NBA.
With only 26 games left in the season, it's still hard to really know about the Clippers' true abilities and chemistry because so many key players have been sidelined.
Immediate clarity remains elusive because their leading scorer, shooting guard Eric Gordon, did not make the trip Monday to Oklahoma City. He stayed home to get treatment on his injured but improving right wrist, which has kept him sidelined since Jan. 22.
Get the monthly that has L.A. talking. Subscribe to Los Angeles Times Magazine at a special introductory rate.
But Clippers forward Craig Smith, out for two months because of a herniated disk in his lower back, could play Tuesday against the Thunder.
With seven weeks to go in the season, there are several items on the Clippers' wish list:
Get healthy
If Gordon returns for Monday's game at Sacramento, it would be the first time he was on the court with both Chris Kaman and Baron Davis since Dec. 5.
It is almost as if Davis, Kaman and Gordon have been on a relay, handing each other the baton of injury since the season's third game. Even the projected first guard off the bench, Randy Foye, sat out more than a month of the season because a hamstring injury.
The injuries to the veterans forced the Clippers rookies into fast-forward mode, and they responded in varying ways. Blake Griffin, of course, has flourished under huge pressure and high expectations.
Point guard Eric Bledsoe started well, lost his way and showed signs of renewed promise in last week's win at Minnesota. Small forward Al-Farouq Aminu, the team's first-round pick last year, looked painfully lost on the recent eight-game trip and has not seemed this adrift since the summer league.
"Let's find out what kind of team we have once we get healthy in a week or so," Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said. "I'm looking forward to the other half" of the season.
Said Kaman: "I know … we've gotten better over the year. We [will] have the same team next year, so we want to continue to make ourselves better. We'll wait and see what happens."
In a sense, next season begins now for the Clippers.
Even if they don't do much besides making a minor move by Thursday's trade deadline, getting a healthy Gordon back is like adding a big piece without sacrificing anything.
Become road warriors
The Clippers have 15 games remaining on the road, starting Tuesday with the Thunder game and the return of rookie and native son Griffin to his roots. There are 11 games left at home in the friendly confines of Staples Center, where they are two games over. 500.
The home-road divide has been stark. Historically, the Clippers have struggled on the road — the last time they won more than 10 road games was in the 2006-07 season, when they were 15-26.
This season, they are 5-21 and dropped their first 11 on the road.
There is even a wide gap in the home-road scoring numbers for Griffin.
Overall, Griffin is averaging 22.8 points per game. But he averages 25.0 points at home compared with 20.2 points on the road.
Interestingly enough, Davis is averaging 15.6 points on the road and 10.9 at home.
"Sometimes you've got to get knocked around and bruised up in order for you to learn," Davis said. "It's like tough love. We've stayed together throughout the [last] trip. We made some mistakes and it cost us on the defensive end and the offensive end.
"It'll be good for us to regroup."
Tougher defense
Foye pinpointed an excellent third quarter against the Timberwolves — in the Clippers' last game before the All-Star break — as what the Clippers need to do defensively. In that game, the Clippers held the Timberwolves to 35.4% shooting.
That is the sort of effort on defense required on nights when Griffin is double-teamed or when the Clippers just aren't clicking offensively.
"We have to learn how to win without shooting the ball well, when our offense is not going well," Davis said. "That's the most important thing and where our growth is going to come."

CAIRO—Egypt has agreed to allow two Iranian naval vessels to transit the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean, a military official said Friday, ending several days of confusion over their planned passage, which Israel's foreign minister has labeled a provocation.
An Iranian diplomat has said the vessels were heading to Syria for training and that the request to move through the canal is in line with international regulations.
It would be the first time since Iran's clerical rulers came to power in the 1979 Islamic Revolution that naval vessels from the country have passed through the canal to the Mediterranean.
The movement of Iranian naval ships past Israeli shores is of concern there because Israel considers Iran an existential threat. Those fears stem from Iran's disputed nuclear program, ballistic missile development, support for militants in the region and its threats to destroy Israel.

Israel Welcomes Egypt's Peace Pledge
The White House said the U.S. was also closely monitoring the progress of the ships, now in the Red Sea. Their passage comes as the region is being swept by antigovernment unrest, including the protests that toppled Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak a week ago and left the military in charge of the country.
It wasn't clear exactly when they would pass the canal, which was already closed for the day when the approval was announced on state media.
The vessels, a frigate and a supply ship, received the approval after routine procedures to check there was nothing illegal on board, said an Egyptian military official.
The approval had been expected. Canal officials say that under international agreements regulating traffic through the waterway, Egypt can only deny transit in case of war or if the ships don't meet safety requirements.
Still, contradictory statements earlier in the week on whether Egypt was considering the request for passage appeared to signal that Egypt's military rulers might be grappling with their first diplomatic dilemma.
Egypt is also wary of Iran's growing influence in the Middle East and hasn't had diplomatic relations with the country since the 1979 revolution.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman declined to comment on Friday's announcement. On Wednesday, Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman had called the plan "a provocation that proves that Iranian audacity and insolence are increasing."
White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters traveling with President Barack Obama on Air Force One that the U.S. was keeping an eye on the ships. "We also would say that Iran does not have a great track record of responsible behavior in the region. It's always a concern to us," Mr. Carney said.
Syria's official news agency carried a statement Thursday from Iran's ambassador to Syria saying the two ships planned to travel to Syria for training and that the visit would be "carried out according to international laws and norms."
Commercial vessels intending to transit the canal, which links the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, must give the waterway's authority at least 24-hour notice before entering the canal.
On Friday evening, Ahmed al-Manakhly, a senior Suez Canal official in the operation room, said he hadn't yet received approval for the ships' passage from Egyptian defense officials. "It is not for me to deny or approve. Once I get an approval, I carry it out," he said.
Mr. al-Manakhly said the waterway was closed to traffic for the day. He said he couldn't recall any Iranian naval vessel ever transiting the canal.
He identified the two vessels as the Alvand, a frigate, and the Kharq, a supply ship.

Mother of stabbed four-year-old facing investigation at work
The seriously ill mother of a four-year-old girl found stabbed to death at her home is being investigated for allegedly breaching patient confidentiality while working at a health centre.

3:22PM GMT 19 Feb 2011
Former nurse Dawn Makin, 33, is in a critical condition in hospital after a suspected suicide bid and is being treated for "various injuries".
She was found lying next to the body of her daughter Chloe Burke in a bedroom at the house in Bury, Greater Manchester, on Thursday night.
A post-mortem examination has revealed Chloe suffered multiple stab wounds.
Ms Makin, who previously worked as a nurse at Fairfield Hospital in Bury, is accused of passing information on to a third party while working at the Moorgate Primary Care Centre.
An investigation is being carried out by the Information Commissioner's Office.
A spokeswoman said: "We are investigating a breach of confidentiality regarding patient information at NHS Bury, which involves a former employee who was based at Moorgate Primary Care Centre.
"These are very sad circumstances. As the police are conducting an investigation, it would be inappropriate to provide any further information."
Officers were called to Ms Makin's house in Lea Mount Drive, Bury, after being alerted by an ambulance crew.
Ms Makin's employment at the care centre came to an end in August last year.
An NHS Bury spokeswoman said: "We are deeply saddened by recent events. As there is an ongoing investigation into past events, we cannot make any further comment."
Police said they were still investigating the circumstances that led up to the girl's death, but said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Rawlinson, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This is a very tragic case that has resulted in a young girl losing her life and our thoughts remain with Chloe's family, who are understandably very upset by what has happened."
Chloe's father Michael Burke, 38, who is understood to be separated from Ms Makin, said his life has "fallen apart" since the little girl's death.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he said: "She was just your typical four-year-old girl. She had lots of curly hair and she loved Peppa Pig.
"She was a little bubbly thing. What more can you ask for? My world has fallen apart."

Tottenham coach Joe Jordan brands AC Milan captain Gennaro Gattuso 'pathetic' over racist slur claim
Tottenham coach Joe Jordan has branded Gennaro Gattuso "pathetic" after the AC Milan midfielder claimed a racist remark provoked his headbutt during Tuesday night's Champions League clash at San Siro.
Fiery encounter: Uefa will discuss the case against the 33 year-old Italian next week Photo: GETTY IMAGES
By Telegraph staff 9:38AM GMT 18 Feb 2011
Gattuso has been charged with "gross unsporting conduct" by Uefa after headbutting former Milan striker Jordan following Tottenham's 1-0 Champions League last-16 first-leg win.
Uefa's control and disciplinary body will discuss the case against the 33-year-old Italian on Feb 21.
His agent, Claudio Pasqualin, claimed Jordan had called him an "Italian b*****d", but the Scot has rubbished those allegations.
"To come up with something like that is pathetic," Jordan said. "It is completely and utterly untrue and something so wildly inaccurate doesn't do him much credit.
"He clearly doesn't realise I consider playing for Milan the proudest time of my career, that my daughter lives and works in Italy and that I love the country and the people. It's just a nonsense, it really is."

COMMENTARY
KEY MOMENTS
WRAP: So it's arrivederci from the San Siro. A super game, but you've got to ask: what does it say about Serie A if that's the team that's currently top of it? Milan's big names shirked the fight, apart from one guy who got a bit carried away and thought he was Roberto Duran. If someone had presented Rino Gattuso with a smiling baby during that second half, he would have slapped it. He was in that kind of mood. Meanwhile, Tottenham one giant step closer to the quarter-finals. Could we be seeing a fairytale to match that of Leeds United a decade ago? By which I mean, in three years' time will Tottenham be staving off both administration and relegation to League One, and be managed by Eddie Gray?
See you tomorrow for Arsenal v Barca, y'all...
21.57 Sky show Redknapp that challenge by Flamini on Corluka. "That's a red card," he splutters. "How can that not be a red card? They need to look at that. That's a disgrace." But he lightens up when he sees a replay of Gattuso flying at the Tottenham bench like a leopard pouncing on a ham sandwich. "Of all the people to pick on, don't pick on Joe," Redknapp chuckles. He doesn't add the words "when you've got Clive Allen standing next to him", but he scarcely needs to.
21.54 "We always knew if we got a break away we could get that away goal." Lennon says. Meanwhile, Crouch is sanguine about his feat of winding-up Rino Gattuso so hard he actually ceased to be human. "That's always been his game," Crouchy says, eating his metaphorical nachos. "Luckily I didn't rise to it."
21.51 Let's get you some reaction. Here's Peter Crouch and Aaron Lennon.
Paul Kelso on Twitter: "Unless I'm mistaken, Joe Jordan still has a word or two of Italian." He only needed two, by the looks of things.
21.46 But back to the main story tonight. Tottenham have conquered the San Siro! What a wonderful effort by Harry Redknapp's team, who will now be strong favourites to close out the deal at the Olympic Stadium White Hart Lane. Sandro, Van der Vaart, Gallas, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto, all excellent. Not only did they beat the great AC Milan; they drove them up the wall.
21.45 Goodness gracious, that was hilarious.
21.44 Eventually Yepes and Ibrahimovic and a bunch of far more sensible souls drag Gattuso away and hustle him down the tunnel. Crouch follows him with a cheeky smile.
21.43 Gattuso head-butts Joe Jordan! What on earth has he got against Joe Jordan? And just how crazy is he? Does he know he's trying to fight Jaws here?
FULL TIME AC Milan 0-1 Tottenham Gattuso's gone off-piste! He's lashing out at everyone he can see!
90+4 min DISALLOWED GOAL (Milan) What's that for? Nobody knows! Ibrahimovic with a stunning bicycle kick low into the corner, but the goal-line official has his flag up! And that's it!
90+3 min Robinho has a shot blocked from four yards! Corner to AC Milan! Amelia's coming up for it!
90+2 min Crucial challenge by Assou-Ekotto on Robinho! If he'd got that wrong, it would have been a penalty for sure!
90+1 min Modric and Kranjcar try to keep the ball in the corner, but given they've got a combined weight of about nine stone, it doesn't take long for Milan to muscle them off.
90 min If Tottenham could pick one man to see this game out, it would be Modric. Or perhaps He-Man. But Kranjcar dispossesses the wretched Yepes and races towards goal! His cross is scuffed, but it's a corner!
89 min The crowd are filing out of the exits. Four minutes of added time! Can Tottenham cling on? Nothing we've seen so far would suggest they can't...
88 min Now, Milan have numbers over on the left. Ibrahimovic pulls the trigger... and by George, that's a shocker. Gomes is almost bemused as he watches it sail by, much as James Bond might watch one of Blofeld's goons falling off a cliff.
86 min Robinho shoots tamely wide. "Greetings from minus 25C Finland, Jonathan," writes Roger Noel Smith. "Watching the print appear is like the anticipation in fishing. Crouch's goal is a monster pike."
85 min AC Milan can't get the ball! I've lost count of the passes. Thirty? Forty? The seven-time champions are being humiliated in their own backyard! The Tottenham fans, predictably, are in Utopia.
84 min It's a matter of keep-ball for Tottenham now. They're so close. Modric and Palacios knock the ball around languorously in midfield. That's excellent, level-headed football by Tottenham.
82 min Look at how the Milan heads have dropped. There are over 70,000 AC Milan fans in that stadium, and the only song you can hear at the moment is 'When The Spurs Go Marching In'. Oh, and Mark Ronson. Who's got the Brits on in the background?
81 min Henry Winter uses exclamation marks about as often as he uses the bus! That's how vital that goal was!
Henry Winter on Twitter: "Sensational... Lennon raced down right, squared to Crouch!!!!"
79 min GOAL Milan 0-1 Tottenham (Crouch) IT'S A GOAL! Milan suckered on the break! Tottenham with a golden chance to conquer the San Siro! Lennon bursts free, and it's two on two. Except it's practically two on one when one of them is Yepes. He lunges in wildly on Lennon, who can simply knock the ball past him and square the ball for Crouch. Crouch shook off the attentions of Nesta and slotted the ball home from 10 yards!
78 min This midfield area, which is increasingly beginning to resemble the first day of the Somme, or at the very least the first day of the Ikea sale, is no place for a slight Croatian. Modric is bustled off the ball.
77 min Sandro gives the ball away. They're getting pushed further and further back, are Tottenham. Are they flagging a little?
Ian Chadband on Twitter: "Gattuso is an absurd, growling panto villain. Joe Jordan, even now, could take him in two rounds. Oh yes he could..."
75 min Gattuso lunges at Pienaar from behind! He's committed enough offences so far to get him a court summons, let alone a card. And yet the government persecutes innocent, law-abiding motorists, while thugs like Gattuso are free to roam the streets... In fact, Gattuso does get booked for this one, a decision he takes with a surly swing of the right arm.
74 min Here he is, though, with the ball on the right. Antonini's been covering his runs a lot better in this half, and Lennon has to go backwards. The ball swings out left to Assou-Ekotto, and then Palacios gives the ball away.
72 min Gallas gives the ball away! This could be trouble for Tottenham, but Sandro gets in a vital challenge to put it out for a throw. He's had a great game. Palacios, he's had a great game. Lennon, meanwhile, hasn't been seen since about the eighth minute of the game.
71 min Again Milan hoist the ball into the area. They're as purposeful in this second half as they were anaemic in the first. Great defensive header by Sandro, and Assou-Ekotto can complete the clearance.
70 min Crouch with the header! It's weak, though, and straight at Amelia. And Milan break! Robinho lays it off to Flamini, and his shot is deflected for a corner.
69 min Now, free-kick for Tottenham on the right. Dawson and Gallas venture upfield. Modric is going to take it...
67 min Gattuso's lost his mind! How is he still on the pitch? He goes up for a header with Crouch, lashes out with an arm, and as Crouch catches the ball after an offside whistle, Gattuso snatches the ball out of his arms and then shoves him in the chest! Again, nobody sees it!
66 min Another escape for Tottenham! The cross comes in from the right, it runs over an identified foot and Dawson hacks it away about three yards off the line.
Henry Winter on Twitter: "Kicking off now. Flamini should have gone for horrible challenge on Corluka. Gattuso just pushed ex-Milan Joe Jordan in face"
64 min We've seen precious little threat by Tottenham so far in this half, and after the first-half they've had, it would be a real disappointment if they went home without an away goal. And Pato's almost in. Almost.
62 min Rafael van der Vaart comes off - he missed the Sunderland game on Saturday with injury, and probably wasn't 100 per cent tonight. Luka Modric comes on to replace him, and that's not a bad name to bring off the bench. Like having your lead guitarist pull out just before a gig and being able to replace him with Carlos Santana.
61 min Yepes takes out his frustration on Wilson Palacios and earns himself a booking.
60 min Great save by Gomes, and he keeps Tottenham in the game again! It was a flying headed effort at the back post from an unmarked Yepes after a short corner on the Milan right, and Gomes did excellently. Dawson hooks it away.
58 min It's still pretty heated out there. Redknapp and his assistant Joe Jordan having a little chip at Gattuso on the touchline, and Gattuso responds by shoving Jordan in the face! He'd have been off if any of the officials had seen that! This is getting a trifle picante, no?
56 min The Tottenham and AC Milan players faced off amusingly for a little while, in a sort of "Oh, yeah?" "Yeah!" fashion. Corluka is lifted off the pitch - down to the even barer bones for Harry Redknapp - and Jonathan Woodgate comes on. After 18 long months, Woodgate emerges from the injury wilderness. That's always nice to see.
54 min And Flamini flies two-footed into Corluka on the left touchline! He's got to go for that! He's got to! Yellow card! In an instant, referee Stephane Lannoy is swamped by white shirts. Van der Vaart gives Ibrahimovic a little prod in the chest, and they glower at each other for a while. Corluka's still getting treatment, and the stretcher's being called for...
53 min Free-kick about 35 yards out for Tottenham. Is Rafael van der Genius going to have a go? He is, you know! It's straight at Amelia, though!
52 min Shouts of handball as Dawson challenges Pato on the edge of the area! Again, nothing given! Pato's instantly brought a greater urgency to Milan, though. It looks like he's going up top with Ibrahimovic, with Robinho dropping back into the 'ole.
51 min Van der Vaart shoots well over the bar from 20 yards. He was in a good deal of space, though. Could open out pretty sweetly, this game.
50 min: What a save from Gomes! Yepes ran on to Robinho's chip in the box and powered a header at the top corner from eight yards out but Gomes threw out a hand a turned it over. This game is starting to heat up, thankfully.
48 min: Lennon dinks it in from the right and there doesn't seem any immediate danger but Van der Vaart, twists away from the defender and chips it narrowly over Amelia but wide. So close!
46 min: The Brazilian Pato has come on to replace Clarence Seedorf. Quite why he didn't start I don't know, but he'll surely offer more of an attacking threat than the Dutch master/BBC pundit.
20.39 Phil Siegelman on email: "As a Spurs fan reading eagerly from the south-east US, I definitely appreciate the use of 'y'all'! Hope the Spurs can keep it up in the second. Hopefully Kranjcar for Sandro or Pienaar can make a difference in the scoreline." Couple of touchdowns should make the difference, I reckon.
HALF-TIME AC Milan 0-0 Tottenham Thiago Silva and Sandro swap shirts at half-time. Bit strange, that. I imagine Thiago's all right, they'll have plenty of spares in the Milan kit room, but Sandro's going to look a bit stupid walking out in his wife-beater at the start of the second half, going up to Thiago, and whispering... "Mate, you wouldn't still have... would you?"
45+1 min We're going to have only two minutes of injury time. Assou-Ekotto tries to find Van der Vaart in the left channel, but that's misplaced. Half-time, y'all.
45 min We're going to have quite a bit of injury time, I'd reckon, as a result of that injury to Abbiati. Should Tottenham have a lead to match their impressive first-half display? It could be argued that way...
43 min That's lovely! Seedorf tricks Corluka and tries to release Antonini down the left. It trickles straight over the goal-line. That just about sums Milan's night up so far.
41 min That's the closest Milan have come! Abate slams the accelerator on and gets the cross in from the right. Gomes saves with three Milan players bearing down on him. If I'm not mistaken, that's the first save he's had to make all game.
39 min Now, Lennon, in acres of space. Can he find the cross? Oh, that's awful! It almost goes out of play on the opposite touchline without bouncing! Lennon could be a real gem if he could just sort out his crossing. And as all good midwives know, it doesn't matter how good your performance is if you mess up the delivery.
38 min Milan go route one, trying to find Ibrahimovic. Gallas heads it calmly on to Gomes. That's the ultimate sign that the Milan cupboard is empty.
36 min Seedorf tries an elegant back-heel on the right-wing, makes a complete risotto of it, and the Milan fans jeer and whistle! They're turning on their own team here!
35 min Abate races down the right, opening up his legs and showing his class. Assou-Ekotto races with him, and eventually manages to shepherd him out of play for a goal-kick.
34 min Oh, that's lovely from Van der Vaart, skipping clear of Gattuso, playing it to Pienaar, getting it back and then swinging a cross in. Nesta gets up to clear.
32 min Milan have had a little more possession in the last few minutes. They're just feeling their way into this game. Tottenham haven't quite been able to maintain their early threat. Perhaps it's time to adjust those predictions. Sack Redknapp! Actually, sack the lot of them! And you know as well as I do that Egypt can't handle democracy!
30 min Aw, that was a bit soft. Dawson feathers Robinho and gives away a free-kick. Ibrahimovic is going to line it up from about 30 yards. Here he comes... and it's wide. Gomes can simply watch it go by.
28 min There's simply been no urgency to Milan. At least, not until they get into the final third, and they haven't done too much of that so far. There's been no urgency to Tottenham, either, but in a good way. They haven't plunged headlong into their assault, losing their shape. They've been patient, diligent, measured, but since Abbiati's injury they're yet to test the new goalkeeper.
26 min All right, all right, let's not start picking out potential quarter-final opponents for Tottenham just yet. Although if we are going to tempt fate, why not really push the boat out? A Tottenham v Arsenal final! At Wembley! With Sian Massey refereeing! And democracy for Egypt! And Burma! And North Korea!
Mark Ogden on Twitter: "If you had to pick an overrated XI, Robinho and Ibrahimovic would be the strikers. Spurs have nothing to worry about."
24 min Sandro and Pienaar exchange passes on the Tottenham left. Pienaar tries to play it through for Crouch, but he's around six yards offside, and knows it too.
22 min Milan want a penalty as Sandro piles into the back of Ibrahimovic! Not given! That's a real escape for Tottenham, it looked like a stonewaller.
21 min It's headed away, but as it comes back in from Assou-Ekotto Tottenham have around three men unmarked at the back post! It pinballs around the area for a bit before Milan eventually clear it. At the moment, it's Tottenham who are looking like the seven-time European champions, and Milan who look like a team that lost at home to Wigan this season.
20 min First real sign of danger from Milan! Ibrahimovic pulls the ball across the area, and Gallas has to clear on the stretch. At the other end, Lennon again teases Antonini on the Tottenham right, and wins a corner off him. Pienaar to take.
18 min Eventually we're under way again. Amelia gets his first touch as Nesta passes the ball back to him. As soon as Milan get the ball, Tottenham are organising themselves into a tight defensive formation and pressing as a unit. Eventually a frustrated Robinho punts the ball straight out of play.
16 min And Abbiati's going to come off. Big blow for Milan, that. Marco Amelia's going to replace him, but there's going to be further delay as he's not quite ready to come on yet. Hardly surprising, as he probably thought he was going to be spending the evening watching from the bench with a packet of Haribo.
15 min Now Abbiati's taken a blow on that bald head of his. He leapt to pluck the ball off Crouch's head, and as they both fell Crouch's shoulder caught his head. This doesn't look too good for Milan.
14 min I think it was Nesta who headed that corner away. But Tottenham have the ball back, and they're passing the ball around with real confidence.
13 min Assou-Ekotto with a deep cross, and at the moment the Milan defence seem more preoccupied with marvelling over Crouch's size than trying to get the ball off him. Crouch's header is blocked for a corner.
11 min Van der Vaart with the shot after Crouch chests down another cross from Corluka! It's deflected, and runs kindly for Abbiati. Tottenham are all over Milan like a pizza topping here.
10 min Abbiati rescues Milan again! Sparkling ball from Corluka for Lennon, who raced outside Antonini and whipped a cross in, and Abbiati parried it off a Milan defender and out of danger. Van der Vaart reckons that caught a Milan hand on the way out, but it's play on.
9 min Ibrahimovic plays a clever reversed one-two with Robinho, and he's through on goal. But he's offside. Little reminder for Tottenham of what AC Milan are capable of.
8 min And Crouch was in acres of space there! Lennon gets to the byline, his cross is headed away, it comes back in from Corluka, and with Crouch completely unmarked, Abbiati scrambles desperately out and punches it away!
7 min Gallas bustles Robinho off the ball. Goal kick to Tottenham.
6 min Again Tottenham getting into dangerous areas. Van der Vaart fouls Seedorf, though, and Milan can have a bit of a breather.
4 min This is a strong start from Tottenham, who were already about 5-2 down by this stage against Inter Milan. Corluka gets into an advanced position and crosses for Crouch again. Abbiati saves.
2 min Crouch is offside. But the ball comes back straight away from Tottenham, again trying to find the head of Crouch, and this time referee Stephane Lannoy rules that Crouch is backing into Abbiati. Bright start by Tottenham though, this.
Paul Kelso on Twitter: "Big night for Sandro. Wonder if pace of Champions League may suit him."
1 min Good start by Tottenham! Van der Vaart and Pienaar - preferred to the eternal bridesmaid Niko Kranjcar - combine on the left and Pienaar whips a thigh-high cross into the area. It's cleared away for a corner.
19.45 First sight of Harry Redknapp, busily getting drenched on the touchline, the copy of the Racing Post sticking out of his side pocket turning to pulp. All right, he doesn't have a copy of the Racing Post sticking out of his pocket. But he could have done. That's the kind of freewheeling maverick our Harry is. Right, we're off.
19.42 Rain in Milan tonight. Lots of this. I suppose you could draw all kinds of conclusions from that. Perhaps the slick surface will suit Spurs's more direct passing style. Perhaps Peter Crouch, as the first man on the pitch to get rained on, will be affected more than most. Perhaps the ball will get wet. Stuff like that.
19.40 It's Jeff Stelling on Sky for us tonight. From the sound of it, he's lost his voice a little. The teams are in the tunnel. William Gallas and Mathieu Flamini share a warm embrace in the tunnel. All right, lay off that.
19.35 What do we reckon? Can Tottenham pull this one out of the bag? Or will AC Milan - who have looked in impressive form of late in Serie A - pick them off? Do drop us a line.
19.15 Milan line up pretty much as expected, with Robinho preferred to Alexandre Pato. For Tottenham, Luka Modric misses the starting XI but makes the bench after being laid low by an appendix-related illness thing, Peter Crouch takes the lone striker role ahead of Jermain Defoe, and there's the heartening sight of Jonathan Woodgate on the bench. The last time he played for Tottenham, they won 9-1. I'm not sure that's strictly relevant, but, you know.
19.10 Hands up. When Tottenham were 3-0 down after half an hour against Young Boys, who thought we would see this moment? Tottenham's Champions League journey to this point has been the metaphorical topsy-turvy, up-and-down, never-dull, all-action, roller-coaster/thrill ride/soap opera/see-saw. It's the San Siro again for them, as they take on the mighty-but-not-quite-as-mighty-as-they-were AC Milan. Stricken by injuries (to his team, not himself), Harry Redknapp has pledged all-out attack, vowing to 'have a right go'. Of course, it might have been one of those Redknapp-esque, twinkle-in-the-eye quips (for which read: outright lie) for which he is becoming renowned. But if Tottenham do give it a go, it should be quite a contest. Right, let's get some team news before I break the hyphen key on my keyboard.
AC Milan (4-3-1-2): Abbiati; Abate, Nesta, Yepes, Antonini; Gattuso, Thiago Silva, Flamini; Seedorf; Robinho, Ibrahimovic.
Subs: Amelia, Pato, Papastathopoulos, Oddo, Jankulovski, Merkel, Legrottaglie.
Tottenham (4-4-1-1): Gomes; Corluka, Gallas, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Palacios, Sandro, Pienaar; Van der Vaart; Crouch.
Subs: Cudicini, Pavlyuchenko, Modric, Defoe, Bassong, Kranjcar, Woodgate.

Prince of Wales: climate change sceptics 'playing a reckless game of roulette'
Climate change sceptics are "playing a reckless game of roulette" with the future of their grandchildren, the Prince of Wales on Wednesday told a European Union conference on global warming.
Prince Charles addresses the European Parliament in Brussels Photo: AP
By Bruno Waterfield, Brussels 5:16PM GMT 09 Feb 2011
Sharing a platform with the most senior officials in Brussels, the Prince attacked those who "corrode" the EU's environmental policies by denying "the vast body of scientific evidence" that climate change is caused by industrial activity.
"I would ask how these people are going to face their grandchildren and admit to them that they failed their future; that they ignored all the clear warning signs," he said.
"I wonder, will such people be held accountable at the end of the day for the absolute refusal to countenance a precautionary approach for this plays a most reckless game of roulette with the future inheritance of those who come after us?"
The Prince accused critics, who accuse government funded climate scientists of bias, of using conspiracy theories to undermine the authority of experts and long-standing environmentalist campaigners, such as himself.
"Their suggestion that hundreds of scientists around the world, and those who accept their dispassionate evidence, including myself, who rather ironically is accused of being anti-science, are somehow unconsciously biased creates the implication that many of us are, somehow, secretly conspiring to undermine and deliberately destroy the entire market-based capitalist system," he said.
Earning the applause of an audience, including Herman Van Rompuy, the president of Europe, the Prince called on the EU to "make it cool to have less stuff" by winning over consumers to their policies.
"So can I ask if you will be courageous enough to seize the moment, set Europe on a course for survival and economic prosperity and so earn the endless gratitude of our descendants?," he said.
Nigel Farage, the leader of the UK Independence Party, claimed the Prince was "scaremongering" for green energy policies that could earn the Royal Family an extra £38 million a year from subsidised wind farms on marine land owned by the Crown Estate.
"It is not certain that CO2 is leading to global warming. It is certain that the measures we are taking against it are expensive and flawed – especially wind turbines. The Royal Family will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of wind farms," he said.
Roger Helmer, a Conservative MEP and climate change sceptic, said: "Even if global warming is man-made, the actions we are taking will achieve a result too small to measure, and even that's only in 100 years time. We might as well sacrifice a golden calf to the sky gods. It would be equally ineffective, but much cheaper."

The Rev. William J. Barber, leader of the state NAACP, is arrested outside the Wake County Schools administration building in Raleigh. (Jim R. Bounds, Associated Press / July 20, 2010)
Reporting from Raleigh, N.C. —
This vibrant Southern capital has enjoyed a reputation for first-rate schools that long ago shed a segregated legacy. Schools in poor urban neighborhoods and prosperous suburbs alike have been praised as racially mixed and academically sound.
But the school board's move to abandon its diversity policy in favor of neighborhood schools has prompted accusations of "re-segregation" and thrown the district into turmoil. Police attend board meetings, where some protesters have been arrested — including the president of the state NAACP, who is now barred from the premises.
Opponents say ending efforts to balance student bodies by race and socioeconomic status will lead Wake County back to the days of Jim Crow. The North Carolina NAACP filed a civil rights complaint, triggering an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education. A national accreditation firm is investigating too, warning that the acrimony could threaten quality education.
Even TV comedian Stephen Colbert weighed in, saying the district's "Three R's" were "Readin', Ritin' and Resegregatin'."
Colbert's mockery and the two investigations were mentioned ruefully by several Wake County residents at an emotional public hearing last month.
"We used to be held up as a national model," resident Jamie Dunston said. "Now we're being held up … as objects of ridicule and disgust, and rightfully so."
Other residents thanked the board for restoring parental choice by allowing children to attend neighborhood schools. Several described long bus rides and lack of parental involvement in schools far from home.
"You're giving us back local control and quality family time," one parent said.
Wake County has become a test of diversity policies nationwide.
"This is really striking," said professor Gary Orfield, who studies school desegregation as co-director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA. "I think it will call into question how useful this model is. It's a shame — it's been so successful."
In a 2009 book, "Hope and Despair in the American City: Why There Are No Bad Schools in Raleigh," Syracuse University professor Gerald Grant called Wake County schools the nation's best for racial and economic diversity.
But the board's 5-to-4 conservative majority, elected in November 2009, says the diversity policy is an unwelcome government intrusion that has led to constant shuffling of students while failing to help low-performing pupils, many of them black.
"We are focused on actually educating kids rather than just distributing kids," said John Tedesco, part of the majority.
The board's most vocal opponent is the Rev. William J. Barber, president of the state chapter of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People. The fiery minister has condemned the conservative majority as "the gang of five," which he says is bent on resegregating schools and flouting Brown vs. Board of Education, the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision that "separate but equal" schools were inherently unequal, and thus unconstitutional.
"Segregation didn't work then," Barber said. "It won't work now."
In June, Barber led a protest at a board meeting, where demonstrators sang and chanted while taking over board members' seats during a recess. Four protesters were arrested, including Barber, who was led away in handcuffs.
Banned from school property, he was arrested and handcuffed again outside a board meeting in July after leading a march to the site. Inside, 16 other protesters were arrested after seizing control of the podium and chanting, "Forward forever! Backwards never!"
As demonstrators scuffled with police, one officer mistook a board member for a protester and briefly pinned his arm.
The sprawling Wake County Public School System serves 143,000 students in 163 schools spread over 800 square miles. The largest district in the state and the 18th-largest nationwide, it is 49.5% white, 24.8% black, 14.6% Latino and 6% Asian.

old eagle eyes
Inspired by the eagle photos that have been popping up lately, I took advantage of a day off to visit Lock & Dam 14 on the Mississippi River, where wintering eagles like to hang out. The bird in this photo is getting ready to go on a little fishing expedition.
