D'Amico dominates, leads LMU to elusive crown

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sarah D’Amico has come a long way since she was last in the circle at St. John’s.

“We knew we had to get back here,” she said.

Then a sophomore, she and Lab Museum lost by 10 runs to Alexandra Sappington and LaGuardia in the PSAL Class B softball final. Since then, all D’Amico wanted to do was get back and finally get her team the championship it felt it deserved. Her dominance made sure of it.

D’Amico stuck out an astounding 15 batters in a 14-2 win over Morris in the championship game Wednesday afternoon at St. John’s University. She fanned the side twice, including a four-strikeout inning in the first because of a throwing error. The Bulldogs scored just one earned run and picked up three hits.

Denis Gostev

Lab Museum's Sarah D'Amico struck out 15.

“She controls the pitch,” Lab Museum coach Charles Jessup said. “She has also developed more strength.”

D’Amico said she’s worked with a pitching coach since her sophomore year and gained late movement on her screw ball and curve. It was the curve that served her well against Morris as an alternative to the fastball, which left batters swinging and missing. She knew she had to be at her best against a team that upset top-seed Frank Sinatra and beat a very good Brooklyn Tech team in the semifinals.

“We came in knowing we had to be ready for these girls,” D’Amico said of Morris. “They could surprise us.”

She said she shouldn’t have done this without her teammates. They provided her with a 9-1 lead after the first inning, easing some of the tension that comes with throwing in a championship game. In a semifinal win over Scholars Academy, D’Amico allowed seven hits and three first-inning runs before posting zeros the rest of the way.

“It was a big-time effort,” Morris coach Christopher O’Mara said of D’Amico.

It earned her and her team a big-time reward in the form of a 'B' title and a PSAL championship banner to call their own.

“We have been trying to get back here ever since,” D’Amico said. …“We really, really wanted it.”

Amazin’s have a month to prove staying power

There were good times for the Mets at Citi Field yesterday, and even a surprise celebration for Terry Collins from his players as they turned off the lights in the clubhouse and sang Happy Birthday to their manager.

With the return of Banner Day, R.A. Dickey’s knuckleball doing dances that even surprised him and the punchless Padres on the menu, the Mets gave 28,361 fans a 2-0 win over San Diego to move six games over .500.

But now the Mets need to knuckle down as the schedule becomes more difficult.

The Mets have won five of six, but with the next eight series, there are no Padres or Pirates in sight. Starting with Cole Hamels and the Phillies on this Memorial Day, the Mets have their work cut out for them as they face the Phillies, Cardinals, Nationals, Yankees, Rays, Reds, Orioles and Yankees again.

“We’ll get to see how good we are,’’ Collins said. “You want to play against the best.’’

All seven opponents between now and June 24 — even the last-place Phillies — are over .500.

To make matters more difficult, David Wright has finally hit a cold spell.

“We’ve been confident from the get-go. You win some games and you feel pretty good about yourself,’’ Wright said, “but we have a tough stretch coming up so we are going to need all that confidence and momentum that we built this last week going into the next couple of weeks because we know we’ve got some big tests.’’

Collins celebrated his 63rd birthday yesterday. For the last 41, he has been in pro ball. His common sense guidance has been a big reason for the Mets’ surprising success.

One of Saturday’s hitting heroes was Vinny Rottino, who was going to pharmacy school before getting a tryout with the Brewers a decade ago. That was just about the same time reliever Tim Byrdak, who was terrific again yesterday, was working the overnight shift at Target.

This is a persistent group that knows the value of hard work.

This is also a different group. Closer Frank Francisco, who picked up his 13th save yesterday, admitted he is doing better now because he is throwing his bullpen sessions from the mound as opposed to doing his bullpen work solely on flat ground. Yes, pitching from the mound in practice does help you pitch from the mound in games.

Now that Johan Santana and Dickey are putting back-to-back efforts together, the Mets have a starting pitching base that is essential to any team’s success. Dickey has fanned 29 batters over his last three starts, the highest three-start total of his career. Santana was magnificent on Saturday.

As some of those banners proclaimed, “You gotta believe.’’

To really understand these Mets, just look at yesterday’s battery: catcher Mike Nickeas, who hit the first grand slam of his career Saturday, and Dickey. Flash back to six years ago, when Nickeas was a young catcher trying to learn his craft with the Texas Rangers and Dickey was trying to learn to throw the knuckleball for those same Rangers.

“I’d be the first one in the cage in the morning, because I was the young guy there,’’ Nickeas told The Post. “And R.A. would be two cages over with buckets of balls, just trying to throw knuckleballs. People don’t understand how much effort he put into this to learn how to throw the knuckleball. It was the right personality to be able to do this. His knuckleball was crazy today.’’

Now that the schedule toughens up, people expect these Mets to knuckle under. Yes, they are 27-21, but let’s see how they fare against these quality teams coming up, especially the Yankees and Rays.

“That’s fine,’’ Nickeas said with a smile. “People have expected a lot of different things about us throughout this whole year. ... We believe in ourselves. We can play and play well together. That’s really important.’’

Never more important than these next four weeks.

Johnnies reach Big East final

Kyle Hansen allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings as St. John’s advanced to the Big East baseball championship finals for the third straight season with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame yesterday in Clearwater, Fla.

Hansen (4-5) struck out seven, while scattering five hits to earn the win.

The Johnnies broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth on Baltz’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

St. John’s will meet South Florida today. The Bulls beat UConn twice yesterday to advance, 2-1 and 1-0.

Manhattan 6, Rider 5

The Jaspers avoided elimination for the second straight day to advance to the MAAC Tournament championship round.

Manhattan (31-25) needed catcher Ramon Ortega’s fourth RBI in the bottom of the eighth to top Rider (22-34). The top-seeded Jaspers will face No. 2 Canisius tonight.

USF 2, Hofstra 1 (9)

In Tampa, the Pride were eliminated by the host Bulls at the NCAA softball Super Regional.

Stephanie Medina’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning drove in the winning run in the nightcap, which ended the season for the Pride (42-15).

Former Yankee Don Larsen selling perfect game World Series uniform

Don Larsen delivers a pitch during his World Series perfect game in 1956. The jersey he wore that day will hit the auction block later this year.

HAYDEN LAKE, Idaho -- Former Yankee Don Larsen -- the only man to pitch a perfect game in a World Series -- is putting his uniform from that historic day in 1956 up for sale to help fund his two grandsons' college education.

On Oct. 8, 1956, Larsen retired all 27 Brooklyn Dodgers he faced, striking out seven as New York won Game 5 at Yankee Stadium on the way to winning the series in seven games.

As an indication of what the jersey and pants might be worth, the uniform Larsen's teammate Yogi Berra wore that day sold for $565,000 at auction.

"I'm auctioning the uniform to provide my grandsons with enough money for a college education," Larsen told The New York Times in a telephone interview from his home in Hayden Lake, Idaho.

"What the uniform actually sells for is not that important to me. Whatever happens, happens. I'm just hoping for enough to help the grandkids."

Larsen, 82, and his sports marketing agent have consigned the uniform to Steiner Sports Marketing, which is set to hold an online auction from Oct. 8 -- the 56th anniversary of the perfect game -- to Dec. 2.

"I really don't know what it is worth," Larsen said. "But what I do know is that in terms of historic importance, my uniform is a part of one of the greatest moments in the history of sports. I have thought about that perfect game more than once a day, every day of my life since the day I threw it.

"It was a moment in time that changed my life," he added. "That one game has helped me tremendously over the years with paid appearances at card shows, conventions, all sorts of things."

Larsen, a right-hander, had an 81-91 record with seven teams over 14 seasons. He was named World Series MVP in 1956.

Ageless Brodeur ready to fill Cup

headshotMike Vaccaro
Follow Mike on Twitter

From the other side of the ice, Martin Brodeur kept looking for a sign: a spinning red light. Upraised hockey sticks. A gathering dog pile.

Anything.

Hey, it’s a good 180 or so feet from where he was standing, inside the sky-blue Devils crease, to where the action was taking place, just in front of Henrik Lundqvist’s trapezoid. And maybe you’ve heard but … Marty’s 40. Even if the nerves are just as steely as they were when he was 22, it’s hard peering through 40-year-old eyes.

Trying to tell the difference between what you want to see and what you really see.

OH YEAH! Martin Brodeur pumps his fist while celebrating the Devils’ 3-2 overtime victory over the Rangers last night in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals.

UPI

OH YEAH! Martin Brodeur pumps his fist while celebrating the Devils’ 3-2 overtime victory over the Rangers last night in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals.

“I kept moving up, and then back, up and then back,” he said, laughing, recalling the anxious moments before Adam Henrique buried the puck behind Lundqvist 63 seconds into overtime, clinching the game 3-2 for the Devils and the series, 4-2.

And wouldn’t you know it: here came the 40-year-old goalie, taking a victorious leap and then sprinting toward a joyous pile of Devils, and damned if Marty didn’t look half his age, acting a quarter of it, loving every second of it.

“This,” he would say, “is why you play this game.”

And this is why the Devils will play more games starting Wednesday, and why the Rangers won’t play again until after the baseball playoffs have begun: because across these six games and 13 days, they had Martin Brodeur on their side, and the other guys had someone else. In the end, it didn’t matter that someone else was Lundqvist, probably the best goalie alive today at age 30.

Because Brodeur, affable as he is, still burns about the puck Stephane Matteau snuck past him 18 years ago tomorrow, evidenced when he said, “We’ve won three Cups since then. But we’re always taking a second seat to that team for some reason.” And because Brodeur has won more hockey games than any goalie ever born. You win that much, it can be habit-forming.

“He gives us a chance to win every game,” Devils captain Zach Parise said. “When they put pressure on and guys are getting antsy, he has the ability to calm a bench down.”

It’s been a long eight years since Brodeur last etched his name on the side of a Cup. Since shutting out the Ducks in Game 7 of the ’03 Finals, Brodeur has ridden a roller coaster that would’ve been unthinkable earlier in his career. He set the all-time record for wins and shutouts, won three of his four Vezina Trophies, beat the Rangers for the first time in 2006. But he also endured a splattering of injuries, lost some awful playoff games, got benched in the 2010 Olympics in favor of Roberto Luongo.

Mostly, there were whispers: he isn’t what he was, he gives up too many soft goals, he’s propped up by his team on good nights, sabotaging them on bad. Amazingly, only 39 days earlier, he heard boos at Prudential Center when he was pulled from Game 3 of Jersey’s opening-round series with Florida after squandering an early 3-0 lead.

Now, the people chanted his name good and long and loud, a reverent cheer, unlike the taunting ones he heard the other night at the Garden. Funny: it didn’t seem to matter to anyone that the Devils had blown a 3-0 lead in Game 5 and a 2-0 advantage last night. After it got to 2-2, the Rangers had great chances to close the deal, never did. Just like at 3-3 Wednesday. Brodeur reached back 10 years both nights. And broke the Rangers’ hearts.

That’s always been the beauty of Brodeur, after all. He was never about standing on his head. Hotshots come and go every spring. The great ones come back every spring. Marty comes back. He may never get to Ken Dryden or Jacques Plante and their six Cups.

But he’s four wins away from tying Billy Smith at four.

“I’m enjoying this ride,” he said, and he should. Forty? That’s just a number. Last night, you could believe he might play forever. Forever player. Forever career.

Stakes same as ’94, but rivals seek own history

This is the stage of glory now, this Battle of the Hudson. The Rangers intend to make their own glowing history, not echo Mark Messier’s 1994 chapter of their book of legends.

The Devils’ road is straightforward, a trip to their fifth Stanley Cup final.

But the Eastern Conference regular-season champ Rangers must match what the last Cup-winning Rangers team did to the Devils in 1994. That team triumphed from a 3-2 series hole after Messier guaranteed a Game 6 victory, then backed it up with a hat trick in New Jersey 18 years ago tonight.

The situation is the same. The Devils hold that 3-2 series lead and can end the Rangers’ season tonight in Newark.

REUTERS

OLD & NEW: Chris Kreider, who had just turned 2 when the Rangers and Devils played their 1994 classic, and the Blueshirts will try to repeat history and beat Martin Brodeur and the Devils in an Eastern Conference finals Game 6 tonight.

Yet the 1994 example shows that if these Rangers pull off a two-victory comeback, they will be well along with making themselves legends, too.

“We’re not here to duplicate this thing someone else did, or the way they did it. We have to write our own story,” Rangers winger Mike Rupp told The Post yesterday.

“In this locker room, we all believe we’re going to win,” said Rupp, who spiced this series by sucker-punching ex-teammate Martin Brodeur on a drive-by in Game 4.

If the words are different, the plot is remarkably similar to that of 18 years ago tonight, after Messier issued his “We’ll Win” guarantee.

The winner of that Battle of the Hudson was headed to the Stanley Cup finals as the favorite, just as either team will be when it faces the Kings starting Wednesday in New York or New Jersey.

The Devils have won two straight games to erase their own series deficit, as they did in 1994. The ’94 Rangers won the Presidents Trophy as regular-season champs, six points ahead of the Devils, while the 2012 Rangers won the Eastern Conference, finishing seven points ahead of New Jersey.

In 1994, the Rangers were back in the playoffs after missing the postseason the year before. This time, it’s the Devils back in the dance after their first miss in 14 seasons. The Rangers brought in Mike Keenan as coach then, the Devils Pete DeBoer now.

“That’s what makes that so great, the way it happened back then,” Rupp said.

Brodeur, a student/professor of NHL history, said this time is different.

“I don’t think there’s anything similar,” said Brodeur, 22 then, 40 now. “I know if you guys look at it, it looks the same. But it’s different teams and a different way of playing the game.

“That’s 18 years ago. That’s a long time. I know I’m feeling a lot different. I’m feeling a lot more appreciative of what’s going on.

“Before, the Rangers were a good team when they beat us. We were not supposed to compete with them at all in ’94. They made these trades and they had all these big guys at the end, and they pulled it off in a dramatic way.

“But this time around, we feel we can play with them. It makes me feel a lot more comfortable going into these games coming up.”

Rangers coach John Tortorella trashed ’94 talk.

“Not to disrespect what happened, but that has nothing to do with how we’re preparing,” he said. “I don’t look at it as overcoming a 3-2 deficit. We need to win a hockey game. We’re preparing to try to win one hockey game, and we’ll see after that.

“There’s no magic. There are no special speakers coming in. None of that. I think we found our game [Wednesday] night, and I think that was mostly a mindset. We played more on our toes. We played to who we are. We have to do that [tonight].”

DeBoer said 1994 is irrelevant.

“I don’t even think about ’94. In ’94 I still had hair. It was that long ago,” he said. “That plays no part in what we’re doing.”

Each team has overcome a 3-2 series deficit in these playoffs, the Rangers over Ottawa, the Devils over Florida. The Devils want to prevent the Rangers from playing a Game 7 for the third straight series Sunday at the Garden.

“I don’t think we’re looking at two chances. We want to do it [tonight],” Dainius Zubrus said. “We’re definitely not hoping to win. We want to win.

“We don’t want to go back to their building. It was a tough game. They played really well, I think, and we don’t want to be going back for Game 7, that’s for sure.”

It’s all on the table, a night to remember. These teams are chasing glory, tonight’s game that stage.

Captain Clutch: Coposio comes up big yet again for Poly Prep in final

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Matt Coposio is quiet and reserved. He doesn’t do a lot of talking, on the field or off of it. He lets his play speak for itself.

His bat, however, has made plenty of noise in each of the last two NYSAISAA championship games.

One year after his two-hit, four-RBI performance in the finals, the Poly Prep senior outfielder came up big in the season’s biggest game yet again. He smoked a two-run, first-inning homerun in the Blue Devils’ 4-2 win over Fieldston on Wednesday afternoon at Hackley in Tarrytown.

“It’s my last game in this uniform, I want to go out with a bang,” the co-captain said. “That’s what me and [fellow senior] Andrew Doar did, not just this game but the entire season.”

Christian Santucci

Poly Prep's Matt Coposio hit a first-inning, two-run home run to lead the Blue Devils to their second straight NYSAISAA title.

Coposio got an inside fastball from Fieldston left-hander Max Kassan and turned it on, rifling the pitch over the wall in left-center field. With ace Andrew Zapata going the distance, dominating the Eagles, Poly Prep won a second straight NYSAISAA title.

The Felician-bound Coposio was lauded after the victory by Poly Prep coach Matt Roventini for his leadership skills, as one of just two seniors starters along with Doar. He quietly went about his job every day, arriving early and leaving late.

When Poly Prep lost two games in a row, to Fieldston and CHSAA contender St. Joseph by the Sea, Coposio was a key to the turnaround, personally making sure his younger teammates never lost confidence.

“I’m going to miss Matt, not just because of the way he plays,” Roventini said. “He’s one of those lunch pail kids. He does whatever you ask and he does it in half the time.”

His first-inning blast was the surge Poly Prep needed. It relieved any pressure it might have been feeling and even when Zapata was touched up for two unearned runs in the third inning, the Blue Devils still held the lead.

Coposio leaves Poly Prep a winner, a two-time private school state champion and four-time Ivy Prep League winner. He was a four-year starter for Roventini. Often, he was overlooked by bigger name teammates, but as an upperclassman, after suffering through two straight losses in the finals, he made sure there wasn’t more heartbreak.

“He’s a gamer,” Roventini said. “I’ve always said big-time players step up in big games. He’s done that all year.”

Last year he had two hits and four RBIs in Poly Prep’s eight-run sixth inning to erase a deficit. This spring, there would never be a deficit, because of his early homer. The result was another celebration, in the final game of his Poly Prep career.

“You can’t explain it,” Coposio said of the joyous feeling. “You play all year, go 20-4, end the season with a win. It’s a great feeling. I’ll remember it forever.”

Comcast calling on iPads

Comcast, the biggest US cable carrier, will let home-phone customers make calls using iPads, smartphones and other mobile devices anywhere they have Internet access, intensifying competition with wireless carriers.

Using a Comcast application, customers can make and receive calls from those devices when they’re connected to the Web via a Wi-Fi hot spot or a wireless data plan, Comcast said.

Three New Jersey boxing officials KO’d for iffy scorecard

Al Bennett sits in front of his television at his condo in Avenel, N.J., watching a replay of April’s fight between Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson in Atlantic City. He has a pen and paper at hand, scoring the fight after each round as if he were watching from ringside.

Problem is, Bennett hasn’t been ringside since July 9, 2011.

That’s when he was one of three judges suspended indefinitely after working the junior middleweight fight between Paul Williams and Erislandy Lara at a ballroom in Boardwalk Hall at Atlantic City.

Four days after Williams was awarded a controversial majority decision that drew boos from most in the crowd, all three judges — Bennett, Donald Givens of Linden, N.J., and Hilton Whitaker III of New Jersey — were put on indefinite suspension by Aaron Davis, the commissioner of the New Jersey State Control Board.

LEFT HOOKED: Al Bennett now scores fights with a notebook on his sofa in New Jersey as he remains suspended indefinitely as a boxing judge following his involvement in a controversial decision last year.

Bill Kostroun

LEFT HOOKED: Al Bennett now scores fights with a notebook on his sofa in New Jersey as he remains suspended indefinitely as a boxing judge following his involvement in a controversial decision last year.

In announcing the suspensions, Davis said in a statement, “we feel that we did not provide our best officiating on July 9.” Davis did add there was no evidence of any corruption on the part of the judges.

Nearly 11 months later, the three judges remain suspended, unable to work in any jurisdiction. Bennett, a judge for 25 years, and Whitaker, a 69-year-old who has been in boxing since age 15, say they feel like scapegoats. In interviews with The Post, they charge Davis with initially lying to them and ruining their reputations and careers.

“For him to do this to me after 25 years, it took me to a place I’ve never been before,” Bennett said. “You take one fight and flushed my whole 25 years down the toilet. He took me to a place where I was depressed. I was kind of ashamed to show my face out in public. It’s like we’ve been put in a dark closet and locked in the closet.”

Whitaker, a retired bus driver, also is angry and frustrated.

“To be told I’m one of the best judges in the world and have done all I have done to climb to where I have climbed to be at a standstill now is aggravating,” he said. “It has taken me out of something that I enjoy and love to do.”

Williams-Lara was televised on HBO, and the broadcast team, including former judge Harold Lederman, favored Lara after the 12-round fight. But Whitaker scored the fight for Williams (115-114), as did Givens (116-114). Bennett saw it a draw (114-114), giving Williams a majority decision. It was the 20th title fight for Bennett, the eighth for Whitaker and the first for Givens.

There was outrage over the decision. HBO broadcaster Bob Papa told his audience, “This is a joke.” Four days later, Davis announced the unprecedented decision to put the judges on indefinite suspension.

Nearly a year later, Whitaker is frustrated after following Davis’ recommendation to attend judging seminars held by the Association of Boxing Commissions in Washington and Raleigh, N.C., where he passed both tests and was recertified on Jan. 21, 2012.

Bennett attended the seminar in Washington, but failed the test. Bennett said he didn’t properly prepare for the test because he was angry over his suspension. He plans to retake the test at an upcoming seminar.

Davis admitted the suspensions have been “long,” but offered no hint of ending the suspensions.

“Those tests are not that hard to pass,” he said. “I’d like for all our guys to pass the test with no problem. I’d like them to have some more ongoing training before I fully reinstate them. Then, after training, I’d probably like them to shadow a judge and come back with those scores.”

Suspending judges is nearly unheard of in boxing, but Davis defended his actions.

“I just don’t go around suspending people with no reason,” he said. “I’d just like people to complete the training. If somebody got wind I reinstated somebody that failed the test that all the judges take, they would look at me crazy.”

Bennett, 62, is confident he will pass the test the next time he takes it. Not only does he miss the estimated $8,000-$10,0000 a year he earns judging, what makes him cringe these days is when they reference the suspensions during boxing telecasts.

“It’s just unfair,” Bennett said. “For me to get back in the game, I’ve got to build back up a whole new reputation. But I’m not going to quit because of this. I’ve been a judge for 25 years and didn’t have any problems until that night.”

Davis said all the judges are “good guys,” but hopes the suspensions send a message to other judges in New Jersey and regulatory commissions around the country.

“We can’t be satisfied with subpar performances,” he said. “We don’t accept that from fighters. We shouldn’t accept it from our officials either. If people know they’re going to be accountable for their actions, hopefully they’ll take better actions.”

Serby's Sunday Q&A with ... Brian Boyle

Post columnist Steve Serby checked in for a Q&A session with Rangers center Brian Boyle.

Q: How would you sum up what it’s like being a New York Ranger?

A: I won’t do it justice how much it really means to me. I know how fortunate I am. Some days are tough. ... A lot’s demanded of us by our coaches, by ourselves. ... We expect a lot of each other. We’ve been given a lot to be able to play here. To much is given, much is expected. It’s really brought my best game out of me, I think, living here, playing here in the greatest city in the world. It’s unbelievable.

Anthony J. Causi

Brian Boyle

Q: How hungry and driven is this team to bring a Stanley Cup to this city?

A: It’s hard to put that into words. Our play can speak better for that. The sacrifices guys have made ... guys don’t think twice.

Q: You were 9¹/ when the Rangers won the Cup in 1994 against Vancouver.

A: I remember rooting for them. The whole 54 years, just following [Mark] Messier and his legend as it was growing. I loved Mike Richter, I loved Brian Leetch, Adam Graves. ... Those guys were easy to cheer for. ... I remember Pavel Bure getting stoned by Richter on the penalty shot.

Q: Do you remember Messier holding the Cup?

A: I’ve seen it enough times in the years since (chuckle).

Q: Can you imagine what that would feel like?

A: To be honest, I try not to imagine it anymore. Who knows what it would feel like? Especially now, I try not to think about it. I know it’s weird. I don’t want to put too much on my plate and get ahead of myself.

Q: Describe the intensity on the ice in the playoffs.

A: You try and stay as poised and calm as you can. It’s a battle for every inch of ice. ... It’s a war. You’re gonna get every guy’s best effort. They’re gonna come at you as hard as they can. That’s what makes the NHL playoffs the greatest sports spectacle you can watch. It becomes a game of surges and momentum swings.

Q: Describe Rangers fans.

A: They’re passionate and they’re demanding.

Q: That sounds like John Tortorella.

A: (Laugh) It’s impressive to me the knowledge they have as hockey fans. They know a lot about us. I’ve never heard a building like that. I’ve never played for crowds like this. I’m trying to stay in the moment. It’s been a ton of fun.

Q: Have you gotten goosebumps in the playoffs?

A: I try to downplay it and calm myself down. When I was out of the lineup [with a concussion Game 7 against Ottawa], I was going nuts. I was sweating in my suit pacing back and forth. It was something else.

Q: You actually left your 10th floor seat that night.

MF $$ without a trace

MF Global Holdings still can’t trace where some of the money went when its brokerage collapsed, including $1 billion that “vanished” into the brokerage unit MF Global Inc., an attorney told a bankruptcy court.

Brett Miller, a lawyer for MF Global Holdings’ Chapter 11 estate, told US Bankruptcy Judge Martin Glenn in Manhattan yesterday that court papers detailing the assets and debts of five of its six bankrupt units are likely to be filed today.

Details on the sixth, MF Global USA, which filed for bankruptcy in March, will take about another week, he added.

A report is due June 4 from Chapter 11 trustee Louis Freeh on the results of a probe into how the brokerage failed last October. Miller said key information is still unknown.

Separately, a trustee for failed brokerage MF Global Inc. said JPMorgan Chase & Co. has returned $168 million in cash and discussions with the bank are continuing regarding his other claims.

As MF Global Holdings unwinds in bankruptcy to repay creditors such as JPMorgan, its former operating unit, MF Global, is liquidating under the Securities Investor Protection Act to repay customers who are estimated to be out $1.6 billion.

Liberty look to hit the ground running

The Mike D’Antoni Show — fast-paced offense, defense is an afterthought — closed at the Garden in mid-March. But another coach liked what he saw of D’Antoni’s style and decided to integrate it into his team’s attack.

When the Liberty tip off the 2012 season today (4 p.m.; MSG Plus) in the Garden against the rival Connecticut Sun, Liberty coach John Whisenant will have his squad looking to pick up the pace.

“I got a chance to visit with Mike and we talked and he shared some of his thoughts with me,’’ Whisenant said. “It’s an exciting offense. It suits our personnel and will allow us to play with greater pace.’’

Whisenant has not abandoned his white-line defense and, after an opponent made basket or free throw, the Liberty will run their high-low halfcourt offense. But off misses or turnovers, the Liberty will put on track shoes.

The question is whether a faster, and hopefully higher-scoring, attack can offset the team’s weakness inside and improve on last season’s 19-15 record that ended in a first-round playoff loss to Indiana.

The Liberty used the seventh pick in the draft on former Tennessee center Kelley Cain, a 6-foot-6 shot-blocker who is not expected to contribute much this season. Whisenant was criticized for taking Cain that high, but the Liberty lost 6-5 Quanitra Hollingsworth to the Turkish national team.

The core of the team, led by star guard Cappie Pondexter, returns, and the Liberty should be better executing Whisenant’s system in his second season.

Pondexter led her team to the Turkish League title this winter. Center Kia Vaughn led her squad to the Italian League crown. Plenette Pierson helped her team win the Israeli League championship. And Nicole Powell was a driving force in her team claiming the Polish League crown.

“That means we’ve got championship players,’’ Whisenant said.

That’s the good news. The bad news is those players didn’t return to the States until this week. It partially explains the two lopsided preseason losses — 96-81 at Connecticut and 89-57 to Phoenix.

Pondexter, one of the league’s best leaders, said she is determined to get this franchise its first WNBA title.

“I feel like I did not have a great season,’’ she said of 2011, when she averaged 17.4 points but saw her shooting accuracy decline from 48 to 40 percent and her 3-point shooting drop from 43 to 34.5 percent.

“I let the city down, the franchise down, myself down,’’ she added. “There’s a lot on my shoulders.’’

Top floors of Woolworth Building could become apartments or hotel

The top 25 floors of the iconic Woolworth Building appear to be on their way to becoming residential apartments or a hotel.

Steve Witkoff’s Witkoff Group and Ruby Schron’s Cammeby’s International have struck a $70 million deal to sell about 184,000 square feet of the skyscraper to real-estate investors David Werner and Joel Schreiber’s Waterbridge, along with an Israeli investor, sources said.

No one returned calls prior to deadline but with just a small deposit on the line, sources familiar with the parties said the deal could still fall apart or be flipped to other investors.

New Yorkers may soon be able to call the historic Woolworth Building - once the tallest in Manhattan—home as the top 25 floors were just sold to a developer.

Lois Weiss/NY Post

New Yorkers may soon be able to call the historic Woolworth Building - once the tallest in Manhattan—home as the top 25 floors were just sold to a developer.

A deal with Werner was first reported by Real Estate Alert in a newsletter.

The Post exclusively reported on April 4 that the owners were for the first time seriously considering offers to sell the building that overlooks City Hall and was once the tallest in the world.

In 1998, Witkoff and Schron paid $137.5 million to the Woolworth Co. successor with an eye on vacating the higher offices for future conversion to residential condominiums or a hotel.

While condominium documents were approved to separate the building into two units, they never moved ahead with apartment layouts or a formal offering.

Jets: Rex more involved with ‘D’

Jets coach Rex Ryan has slimmed down, but his defensive players say they are seeing a lot more of him.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis and inside linebacker David Harris, appearing at Harris’ charity golf tournament yesterday, both said Ryan has been more actively involved in defensive meetings during the team’s offseason program.

Ryan has acknowledged he wants to be more hands-on this year with the defense. Revis said Ryan was not as involved in 2011 as he had been his first two years as coach.

“He did fade off a little bit,” Revis said. “I don’t know the reason for it. He’s a head coach. He has a lot on his plate. It’s a lot of pressure. It’s just something that maybe he thought he put more trust in the coaching staff and seeing that it kind of hurt us a little bit last year. Not to frown on any coaches or how they coach — it’s good to see your head coach being involved and maybe just putting his two cents in, just hearing his voice every now and then in the meeting room. I think it’s good.”

IN THE TRENCHES: Jets coach <a href=Rex Ryan is taking a much larger role in defensive meetings than he did last season, according to cornerback Darrelle Revis and linebacker David Harris." title="IN THE TRENCHES: Jets coach Rex Ryan is taking a much larger role in defensive meetings than he did last season, according to cornerback Darrelle Revis and linebacker David Harris." width="300" height="300" src="/rw/nypost/2012/05/15/sports/web_photos/15.1s.057.costello.C--300x300.jpg" />

Anthony J. Causi

IN THE TRENCHES: Jets coach Rex Ryan is taking a much larger role in defensive meetings than he did last season, according to cornerback Darrelle Revis and linebacker David Harris.

Harris, who calls most of the defensive signals, agreed with Revis.

“He’s been in our defensive meetings a little bit more so far,” Harris said. “It’s still the offseason, but in our installs the last two weeks he’s been more hands on coaching little points here and there and asking guys if they understand it, younger guys. I think it’s going to be a plus for us.”

The players spoke at the David Harris Invitational Golf Outing at Essex County Country Club in West Orange, N.J., to benefit the Give the Kids Hope Foundation, which supports underprivileged children in North Jersey.

Revis said Ryan reached out to him after last season to talk about what went wrong in 2011. The All-Pro cornerback said Ryan was unaware of some of the issues that had taken over the Jets locker room.

“Rex didn’t know some of the stuff that was going on,” Revis said. “He got wind of it at the tail end of the season. We tried to address it earlier through the players and it didn’t work. He was blind from it because he thought it was over. At the tail end, all of this other stuff started coming out. I think that’s why he’s coming around more to be involved in what is going on and what everybody is doing and just talking to guys and making sure we’re sound as a team.

“I think that’s a big thing, us being sound as a team so we can just go out there and play and not bicker and argue and do all that stuff — just go out and play.”

Revis said Ryan got mad at himself for not being more tapped into what was happening with the Jets. Revis never mentioned wide receiver Santonio Holmes by name, but is widely known now that he and quarterback Mark Sanchez had issues.

“Toward the tail end [of the season] he [Ryan] said, ‘What’s going on?’ ” Revis said. “And everybody was like, ‘Well, this is going on.’ He was like, ‘I didn’t even know.’ It’s like, ‘Well, it’s been going on for a number of weeks now.’ I don’t know how you can’t see it. It’s not him being ignorant to the situation. Sometimes you might need somebody to come shake you up.”

* The Jets signed sixth-round pick Terrance Ganaway to a four-year deal. The running back from Baylor is the third of eight Jets picks to sign.

Poly Prep hammers Fieldston, inches closer to sixth straight Ivy crown

Last week, as Poly Prep waited out the raindrops before practice, several members of the team came to a starting realization. When they finally met Ivy Prep League rival Fieldston -- twice the showdown was delayed by the rain -- the league title would be riding on the matchup.

"We were surprised," senior outfielder Andrew Doar said. "Winning the league is not even a standard, it's to be expected. It motivated us more than anything."

That was evident from the moment Poly Prep ace Andrew Zapata delivered the contest's first pitch. Hungry to secure a sixth straight Ivy crown and exact revenge on Fieldston from an earlier defeat, the Blue Devils coasted to an 11-1, rule-rule victory in six innings in Bay Ridge.

William Thomas

Poly Prep's Andrew Zapata tossed six strong innings as the Blue Devils topped rival Fieldston, 11-1, on Thursday.

Poly Prep's Jesse Calo scores a run.

"It's sweet," Doar said, "that feeling of redemption after they caused us so much pain. It softens that."

With Zapata delivering six mostly brilliant innings and the lineup taking advantage of virtually every opportunity, Poly Prep (15-3, 11-1) clinched at least a share of the league and can win its sixth straight outright crown with a win over Trinity on Friday.

"To win six in a row, to me, is special," Poly Prep coach Matt Rovenitni said. "I always say getting to the top is fun and staying there is exhausting. This is very rewarding. The fact we're there now, I'm proud of the guys."

Zapata, who struck out eight and allowed four hits -- all singles -- added: “We feel we’re back where we should be.”

Poly Prep has come a long way since blowing a four-run, seventh-inning lead in an 8-7, 10-inning loss to Fieldston back on Apr. 13. After losing the next day to CHSAA contender St. Joseph by the Sea, it has won 12 straight contests. Zapata has been responsible for a third of the wins. He has gotten plenty of run support in his starts, which was again the case against Fieldston.

“After you get that first run with Andy on the mound, you can relax and just play baseball,” said Doar, who scored two runs and drove in two.

Poly Prep scratched out seven runs in 4-2/3 off Fieldston (12-3, 9-3) ace Daniel Bricker, who was bedeviled by four walks and a hit batsman, all of whom came around to score. Doar and ninth-place hitter Michael Caron had the big blows, two-out, two-run singles in the second and fourth innings, respectively. The Blue Devils added four in the sixth off reliever Matt Stadler, Christian Pellegrino ending the game early with a two-run double over left fielder Sam Jacobson's head.

“It’s a statement,” Roventini said. “They’re a good baseball team, but we think if we come out and play our ‘A’ game, we can beat any team in the city.”

While Poly Prep had won 11 in a row entering Thursday's action, Fieldston served as a reminder to where the team once was. Zapata, the junior flamethrower many consider the top pitcher in the city, was helpless in that defeat, and was thrilled to get the ball in the rematch.

"All day in school we were talking about this game," he said. "We don't like to lose. So if a team beat us and we get to play them again, we want to beat them badly."

The win sets up Poly Prep nicely. It has four regular season games left -- non-league showdowns with PSAL powers Grand Street Campus and Tottenville and league encounters against us. They could play as many as seven more games, including the NYSAISAA playoffs.

The goal is to extend the current 12-game winning streak to 19 by year's end.

"We're almost there," Zapata said. "We won't be there until we win the rest of our games."

Closer on blood thinners, still plans to pitch again

A torn ACL and meniscus turned out not to be the only health issues doctors discovered when they examined Mariano Rivera on Monday.

They also found a blood clot in his right calf, causing the closer to stay overnight in the hospital and striking fear into his heart.

“I was more concerned about the blood clot than the knee,” Rivera said. “For a minute I thought, ‘What else is gonna happen?’… I was scared. I never hear good things about blood clots.”

Rivera, who complained of pain of stiffness in the area before learning of the blood clots, has been on blood thinners ever since. He said the clot will not delay the date of the surgery, which still has not been set because he needs to rehab the knee and get some range of motion back before going under the knife.

Paul J. Bereswill

Mariano Rivera

Rivera expects the surgery to happen in the next “couple of weeks” and added that doctors weren’t able to tell him whether the injury led to the clot or if it was there before he crumpled to the ground on the warning track in Kansas City last Thursday.

He declined to guess if he’d be able to come back this season, although the Yankees have already ruled him out.

“I don’t want to go that far,” Rivera said. “I just want to take it day by day. I don’t want to put a time frame in my mind, ‘I want to be ready for this time’ [because] if it doesn’t happen, I might be disappointed.”

But he made it clear again that he intends to pitch again.

“That’s what I want,” Rivera said. “I want to do that but I don’t know what the Lord has for me.”

The 42-year-old added that he was most likely going to come back in 2013 even before the injury — despite hinting at retirement in spring training.

“I was leaning toward coming back,” Rivera said. “I was pretty strong on that.”

The time he’s going to miss isn’t going to change that.

“I didn’t have the chance enough to taste the season,” Rivera said. “I was wondering how I would feel: the traveling, the game, it’s the same. The traveling, I hate it; and playing, I love it.”

That includes taking fly balls in the outfield during batting practice.

“It happened doing something I love,” Rivera said. “After 22 years of shagging, it happened.”

And he doesn’t intend to stop when he comes back.

“No doubt,” Rivera said. “I don’t know what the Yankees are gonna do. Maybe they’re gonna tie me up.”

Joe Girardi just wants him back on the field.

“I really believe if Mo wants to continue to play, he’ll play,” the manager said.

In the meantime, Rivera intends to be a visible presence around the team.

“I definitely will try to stay with the club as much as possible, but I also have to focus on myself,” Rivera said. “I’ll try to help in any way I can. I don’t think it will be much, but I’ll be here.”

And he hopes that changes next season.

“I don’t try to prove nothing,” Rivera said. “I don’t want to leave the way it happened. … If it’s my call, I don’t want to leave like that.”

INSIDE BASEBALL: St. Ray's to retire legendary coach's number; Beacon's Sakany picks Rollins

Ron Patnosh will add another accolade to a long list Saturday, one he tried to get out of receiving.

St. Raymond will retire the legendary former baseball coach and athletic director’s No. 1 jersey in a ceremony following the team’s game against Regis at Ravens Field. For years, Patnosh maintained that retired numbers should only be for St. Ray’s alums. He attended St. Francis Prep when it was in Brooklyn.

“I tried to discourage them from doing it,” said Patnosh, who retired after the 2010 season.

Current coach and former Patnosh assistant Marc DeLuca and athletic director Ben Aguirre, a former baseball player for the coach, would have none of it.

Philip Hall

Legendary former St. Raymond coach Ron Patnosh's number will be retired in a ceremony Saturday.

“He’s the foundation of St. Raymond’s sports,” Aguirre said. “Over the last 40 years, any championships we’ve been a part of, any awards we’ve won, he’s been a part of that.”

Patnosh, who played baseball with Joe Torre at St. Francis Prep, got his first teaching job at St. Raymond in 1962 and started the baseball program there four years later. In 45 years at the helm, he won two CHSAA city titles (1980 and 1989), nine division titles and also went to the championship game in 1985, losing a one-run game. The Ravens were one of the city’s premier teams in the ’80s.

He retired after the 2010 season as coach due to bouts with vertigo, staying on as the athletic director. This year, he retired as athletic director to take a position as assistant to the principal, dealing mostly with alumni, until a stroke sidelined him in December.

When he was rehabilitating from the stroke, it reminded him even more of how many lives he touched. Former players were omni-present in the rehab center and his home during the last few months.

“My ex-ball players have been tremendous,” said Patnosh, who is 73 years old. “That’s always rewarding. They’re so grateful.”

Patnosh implies that he doesn’t understand why he meant so much to so many players and students. DeLuca puts it simply.

“He definitely doesn’t see himself as that iconic figure that to everyone else he is,” said DeLuca, who was Patnosh’s assistant for six years. … “He’s definitely a second father to some of these kids, always helping out if they need help in school, always staying after school. If they need money for school, he’s there. He’s definitely not just a coach.”

Patnosh received some bad news in the last few days. It was the family of one of his former students, who was killed in the tragic accident on the Bronx River Parkway last week. In 50 years at St. Raymond, though, he ended up mentoring many through good times and bad.

State of IPO nation

With Facebook’s IPO set to take place in a week or so, tech seems like a pretty fertile field. You can buy lots of shovels and hoes for $100 billion.

Inc. is a pretty good guide for those who aspire to be the next Mark Zuckerberg. Most of the short columns — such as how children of entrepreneurs are two to three times more likely to launch a business — are aimed at those who want to start the next big thing. Best for those with start-up ambitions is the cover story on turntable.fm, whose users create virtual DJs and play songs in a chat room. The article delves into how the two founders, Seth Goldstein and Billy Chasen, are fighting as they try to figure how to keep the once-hot business from falling off the charts.

Wired magazine’s cover story is about Marc Andreessen, a lesser- known tech player than Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs. While the magazine has always been a place where the digerati blow their own horn, the Andreessen interview by editor Chris Anderson falls short of rigorous by miles. Take this exchange: Anderson, “A quote of yours that I’ve always loved is Netscape would render Windows ‘a poorly debugged set of device drivers.’ ” Andreessen, “In fairness, you have to give credit for that quote to Bob Metcalfe, the 3Com founder.” Elsewhere there’s the ubiquitous profile of “The Avengers” director, Joss Whedon.

If you can’t get enough of Jobs, Fast Company serves up a splashy cover package dubbed, “The Lost Steve Jobs Tapes,” elevating it to a Silicon Valley version of the Dead Sea Scrolls. It’s a 12-page collection of hundreds of conversations spanning a quarter-century between the late Apple founder and reporter Brent Schlender. It incudes lots of fawning illustrations of a prophet-like Jobs. For relief, there’s a saucy photo essay on the evolution of beach wear, starting with the knee-length versions of the early 1900s to the current barely there kind.

After the wildly successful Forbes 400 list of billionaires, the magazine has come up with a slew of new groups to which to pander. This cover story of Forbes’ latest issue heralds “The Midas List,” the top 100 tech investors, and the inevitable fluff that purports to explain the brilliant strategies that have made them so rich. For No. 1 ranked Jim Breyer of Accel Partners, it was simple: he happened to make an early bet on Facebook. Forbes under new editor Randall Lane has another list that promises to be a little more intriguing: America’s most powerful art dealers. (There are only 12; average age 65).
