Miller, Fieldston take sole possession of first with win over Poly Prep

Come the spring of 2013, Kate Miller will be crushing home runs for the Princeton Tigers. But on Wednesday, her barrage of long balls paired with dominant pitching was all Fieldston needed to avenge an early season loss to Poly Prep last month.

“I just try to see the ball and hit the ball and hit line drives, that’s all,” she said with a sheepish grin on her face. “Luckily, I was able to hit some in good spots today.”

There are few better feelings for a pitcher than being able to help your own cause with the bat, and Miller, who didn’t play in the first meeting, was able to attain such a feeling twice. She smacked two home runs and drove in four runs at the plate while surrendering six runs, but only four through the first six innings, and a mere five hits on the mound, propelling the Eagles to an 11-6 win over Poly Prep in the Ivy Prep League matchup at Fieldston. Coach Stefanie Gozdziewski was far from surprised by the senior’s solid performance.

“Our bats are on fire right now, hers’ especially,” the coach said. “Even her fielding is spectacular as you saw today. When she’s on the mound, it gives everyone else behind her confidence.”

“Pitching wise, I just trying to throw strikes out there,” Miller added. “That’s all I really can do because I haven’t pitched really since I was a freshman. As a pitcher, there’s nothing better than watching your team kill the ball like they did today.”

Teammate Carolyn Susman, who also hit a home run and drove in three runs of her own, acknowledges Miller as a leader on the field and views her presence mentally as a key cog to her and the team’s success.

“Kate did an excellent job on the mound and her two homers are no surprise at all. She just whacks the ball every game,” the sophomore leadoff hitter said. “Knowing I have her and all of the other great hitters behind me is really comforting for me at the top of the order.”

The Eagles must have gotten pretty comfortable despite the chilly mist by the third inning, though. Miller drilled the first pitch of the frame down the left field line for a home run, answering the home run by Poly Prep catcher Jacquie Kennedy in the top of the inning, tying the game at 3.

After an Amelia Nierenberg sacrifice fly with the bases loaded brought in another run, Susman crushed an offering from Poly Prep pitcher Ciara Schirripa into the center field gap for a three-run home run. The blast broke the game open and gave Fieldston a four run lead they would never relinquish.

“It was my second home run ever, I was just so happy that it went out even though there was no fence,” Susman said. “We all wanted this win really badly. When I crossed home plate, I thought ‘we can win, we can do this’ and I’m just happy I could help the team get a win.”

With the victory, Fieldston (7-1) gave Poly Prep (6-2) their second loss of the season and broke the tie for first place in the Ivy Prep League. With momentum squarely on its side, Fieldston is looking to ride its wave of success through the rest of the season and into the postseason beyond.

“We’ve seen some great competition so far and winning against Poly is huge for us going forward,” Gozdziewski said. “We’ve settled into our confidence and how good we possibly can be.”

Knicks center Chandler wins Defensive Player of Year

Blog: By George

When Kimberly Chandler learned how sick her husband was before the NBA playoffs were about to begin last week, she immediately got on an airplane and flew to Miami to administer her own treatment plan.

Using holistic living methods, she is the reason Tyson Chandler will be nearly 100 percent tonight when the Knicks play Game 3 of their best-of-seven series against the Heat at the Garden.

“I literally gave him every herb you can think of and kept him in the bed,” said Chandler’s high school sweetheart and now wife of seven years. “I kept him held up in a hole, trying to get his immune system back up. With this condensed season, they have no time to recoup. I think he was just exhausted and his immune system was down. So whatever he was susceptible to, he got it. It was awful. He was in a lot of pain.”

Paul J. Bereswill

NOT ON MY WATCH: The stellar defensive play of Knicks center Tyson Chandler earned him the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

Chandler was feeling no pain yesterday as he became the first Knick to accept the NBA’s coveted Defensive Player of the Year award during a press conference at the team training facility. Chandler called it the fulfillment of “a career-long dream,” and thanked his teammates for making it possible.

“I’m not in the top in blocks and I’m not in the top in steals, yet I win an award because I’m able to get a lot of my teammates to play a team game,” Chandler said. “I try to do the right things defensively. I’m just glad it was recognized. Hopefully it takes us further as a team.”

The award came on a day when the Knicks needed some good news. Not only are they down 0-2 to the Heat in their best-of-seven series, but earlier yesterday Amar’e Stoudemire was trying to explain the events leading to his self-inflicted hand wound after punching a fire extinguisher case following a Game 2 loss in Miami.

Stoudemire won’t play tonight and could be out for Game 4 on Sunday. Add the season-ending knee injury to Iman Shumpert and the continued absence of Jeremy Lin because of a knee injury, and the Knicks will be without two starters tonight, making a dominant game from Chandler imperative if the Knicks are to avoid a record 13th straight playoff defeat.

“It seems like this team has done better short-handed and with our backs against the wall,” Chandler said. “Seems like every time somebody got hurt or something happened, other guys have stepped out and taken on the challenge and we’ve been able to bounce back. I really look forward to the way my teammates respond.”

It wasn’t that long ago when the Knicks held a similar press conference to introduce Chandler as part of the Knicks’ new Big Three of Chandler, Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. It was at that press conference when then Coach Mike D’Antoni talked about winning an NBA championship this year.

But D’Antoni resigned under the pressure of a losing season, while Anthony and Stoudemire were in and out of the lineup with injuries. Chandler has been the lone constant, spearheading a defensive philosophy that has helped the Knicks get this far.

“It’s been a growing process,” Chandler said. “We’ve had our ups and downs and our lapses. But for the most part guys really tried to buy in. It’s unfortunate that Coach D’Antoni had to be the one to take the bullet to spark things. But it seemed like things were sparked after that. Guys started to wake up and actually come to play.”

There will be continued debate about whether the Knicks can win a championship with Anthony and whether Stoudemire is damaged goods. There are no such doubts about Chandler. He already has a NBA championship ring, and capturing the Defensive Player of the Year award on a team that was defensively challenged before his arrival speaks volumes about his impact regardless of what happens tonight.

Now if only his wife could heal lacerated hands and torn knee ligaments.

Probe: Daily News editor Myler found ‘complicit’ in hacking scandal

Daily News Editor-In-Chief Colin Myler was accused yesterday of misleading a UK probe into the phone-hacking scandal at the defunct News of the World.

The shocking finding by a British Parliamentary committee investigating controversial voicemail interceptions by staff at the former News Corp. tabloid unanimously concluded that in 2009 Myler “falsely” said the hacking was limited to a single rogue reporter.

“This was not true and ... they would have known this was untrue when they made those statements,” the committee said in its final report, issued yesterday.

Myler, who was hired as top editor of the Mort Zuckerman-owned New York Daily News in January, held the same position at the UK-based News of the World from 2007 until News Corp. closed it last July. (News Corp. owns The Post.)

In a statement, Myler said he stands by the evidence he gave the committee.

“I have always sought to be accurate and consistent in what I have said to the committee,” said Myler, who was once the executive editor of The Post, which he joined in 2001. He left in 2007.

The House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee said it was also misled by Les Hinton, a former exec of News Corp.’s UK division, and Tom Crone, former legal manager at the same division.

Hinton, they said, misled the committee about payments made to Clive Goodman, the former NOTW royal editor who was arrested in 2007 for intercepting phone messages of the British royal family.

Crone and Hinton also denied the committee’s conclusions, with Hinton calling the findings “unfounded, unfair and erroneous.”

“I am shocked and disappointed by the [committee’s] allegations that I have misled Parliament and was ‘complicit’ in a cover-up,” Hinton said in a statement. “I refute these accusations utterly.”

The report also dealt a blow to News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch, and concluded that he “turned a blind eye and exhibited wilful blindness” to widespread wrongdoing at the tabloid. As a result, Murdoch is “not a fit person” to lead a global corporation, the report said.

Murdoch apologized in a statement for “not rectifying the situation sooner.

“There is no easy way around this, but I am proud to say that we have been working hard to put things right,” he said.

The 10-member committee was split along party lines in its verdict on Murdoch — with Labour and Liberal Democrat members of the body voting for the “unfit” language and Conservatives voting against it.

In a press conference yesterday, Conservative Member of Parliament Louise Mensch said she and her fellow party members felt the language deeming Murdoch unfit was “widely outside the scope” of the committee’s mission and part of “an improper attempt to influence Ofcom [the British telecom regulator].”

The report also slammed James Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch’s son and former head of News Corp. ‘s UK division, News International, accusing him of “wilful ignorance” and a “lack of curiosity.”

In a statement, News Corp. promised sweeping reforms.

“We have already confronted and have acted on the failing documented in the report: we have conducted internal reviews of operations at newspapers in the UK and indeed around the world, far beyond anything asked of us by the [London] Metropolitan Police; we have volunteered any evidence of apparent wrongdoing by the authorities; and we have instituted sweeping changes in our internal controls and our compliance programs on a worldwide basis, to help ensure that nothing like this ever happens again anywhere at News Corp.”

Boys High boys basketball, boys track teams honored at City Hall

It was a banner winter at Boys & Girls. The school's boys basketball team won a third straight PSAL Class AA title and New York State Federation Class AA crown, both program firsts, and the boys track & field program won the PSAL indoor title, it had two relay teams win national championship and its 4x 800 squad run the fastest time in the country this season.

A month after, they remained in the spotlight – even though they weren’t on the track or the basketball court. The two teams were honored at City Hall by Councilman Al Vann with a Proclamation with each player's name on it. They met Council Speaker Christine Quinn and schools chancellor Dennis Walcott and were given a tour.

“It’s always special when you get the opportunity to be recognized by the City Council,” Boys High basketball coach Ruth Lovelace said. “It can never get old. It’s been three years in a row, but for them to take their time out and acknowledge what you do is tremendous.”

For the track & field team, however, it was brand new.

“It’s a great experience for kids who haven’t been there, for the kids to see how our city legislature works,” Boys High assistant track & field coach James Johnson said. “They were amazed and awed with how the format was.”

It was even more significant considering Boys & Girls principal Bernard Gassaway instituted a new policy for student-athletes at the beginning of this year. It required them to maintain a grade average of at least 70 percent, pass a certain number of Regents exams, and serve 30 hours of community service to remain eligible.

"I'm incredibly proud of the achievements of our student athletes at Boys & Girls High School, and equally impressed with their progress in achieving academic standards," Vann said.

As part of the ceremony, Vann read out each player’s name and the team’s various accomplishments. The basketball team defeated rivals Lincoln and Jefferson en route to the city title and knocked off CHSAA foe St. Raymond and defending Federation champion Mount Vernon for the state crown.

The track & field team, took home gold in the 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relays at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory on March 11. The team of Richard Rose, Javaun Grant, Lashley Winter and Robert Rhodes set the state record and won the 4 x 800 in a time of 7:41.10, the best in the country this season.

“That was the focal point the fact that both the basketball and the track teams were there,” Johnson said. “It was a phenomenal day for us.”

Fans show our culture is in tank

headshotPhil Mushnick

From Philly to L.A., our sports “culture” was on full review this week.

The Flyers were three goals up and minutes away from eliminating the Penguins last Sunday when, instead of a congratulatory chant of something like, “Let’s go Flyers,” the crowd chanted an obscenity toward Sidney Crosby.

In L.A., after the Artist Formerly Known As Ron Artest assaulted the Thunder’s James Harden with an atomic elbow, Artest, ejected, was cheered as he headed to the locker room — and to his third suspension of seven or more games.

Still, pandering to the bad acts is a specialty of modern society. Last May, days after the NBA bestowed an award for citizenship on Artest — apparently not being fined or suspended for a few minutes is deserving of a lollipop — he was suspended for a playoff game for clotheslining the Mavericks’ J.J. Barea.

PEACE MAKER? Fans cheer Lakers star Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, after he was ejected, and later suspended seven games, after throwing an elbow to the head of Oklahoma City’s James Harden.

Hey, remember what those champs at Nike chose as its Olympic ad campaign: “You don’t win silver, you lose gold.”

More: Seeing how Fordham University has become noted for future sportscasters and newscasters, the school asked two professors to check in on ESPN Radio’s move to KISS 98.7 FM, which included R&B music.

Dr. Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies:

“The purchase [actually, the rental] of KISS by ESPN is indicative of the general shift of music listening from radio to the Web, which has been going on for more than a decade, but is still accelerating with iPhones and iPads as music-listening devices. Sports on the other hand, still has a powerful voice via radio.”

Dr. Mark Naison, professor of African-American studies, sees it far differently: “By contrast, I would say the generation of black people who listen to KISS-FM are dying off rapidly as a result of stress-induced illnesses that result from living in a racist (but post-racial) society.”

Really? Geez.

No mention from Dr. Naison, however, that this sustaining racism will allow ESPN 1050-AM to become New York’s first Spanish-language sports station.

And more: Good chat Wednesday between Howie Rose and Josh Lewin during Mets-Marlins on WFAN.

Rose noted that Marlin Logan Morrison was wearing No. 5, originally retired by the Marlins as a memorial to Carl Barger, the first president of the team who died suddenly few months before the Marlins played their first game in 1993.

The No. 5 was chosen, said Rose, because Joe DiMaggio had been Barger’s favorite. Unretiring that number, Rose said, “Rubs me the wrong way.”

Lewin agreed, saying it reminded him of when the Padres renamed Jack Murphy Stadium Qualcomm Stadium. Murphy, the brother of the late Mets broadcaster Bob Murphy, was a San Diego columnist who worked to have a big league team in town.
