England are on course for what would be their first Grand Slam since 2003 after victories over Wales, Italy and France.

Tindall, who is set to continue to deputise as team captain for the injured Lewis Moody in the Six Nations against Scotland at Twickenham a week on Sunday, said it was difficult to draw comparisons with the current squad and the side of eight years ago which won the World Cup.

However, the one link between the two sides, according to Tindall, is the passion of Johnson, who was captain in 2003 and has been England manager since 2008.

“When he is in the changing room he shows more of the Martin Johnson that you saw on the field,” Tindall revealed.

“We wanted to see that fiery side of him.

"Every time we go out before a game he looks like he wants to be out there with us. He’s grown into his role but we’ve always known about him having that ability to relax and have fun.

“That comes from having a successful team and we’re fortunate at the moment because that’s what we’ve got.It brings everybody closer together and everybody enjoys being here, the more successful it gets.”

England released Bath centre Matt Banahan and Gloucester prop Paul Doran-Jones on Thursday night to play for their clubs in the Aviva Premiership this weekend.

Courtney Lawes, who has been sidelined since January with a knee injury, is to make his eagerly-awaited comeback for northampton saints, who face Exeter Chiefs on Sunday.

Leinster and Ireland full-back Rob Kearney has signed a new two-year contract with the Irish RFU.
