Johnnies reach Big East final

Kyle Hansen allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings as St. John’s advanced to the Big East baseball championship finals for the third straight season with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame yesterday in Clearwater, Fla.

Hansen (4-5) struck out seven, while scattering five hits to earn the win.

The Johnnies broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth on Baltz’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

St. John’s will meet South Florida today. The Bulls beat UConn twice yesterday to advance, 2-1 and 1-0.

Manhattan 6, Rider 5

The Jaspers avoided elimination for the second straight day to advance to the MAAC Tournament championship round.

Manhattan (31-25) needed catcher Ramon Ortega’s fourth RBI in the bottom of the eighth to top Rider (22-34). The top-seeded Jaspers will face No. 2 Canisius tonight.

In Tampa, the Pride were eliminated by the host Bulls at the NCAA softball Super Regional.

Stephanie Medina’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning drove in the winning run in the nightcap, which ended the season for the Pride (42-15).
