Through The Binocs

Winter Memories, arguably one of the most talented turf runners presently in training in North America, made her 2012 debut a winning one as she drew off in the stretch to win the $150,000, Grade 3 Beaugay Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths over Gitchee Goomie.

The Jimmy Toner trainee was covered up for most of the race but once she got racing room at the top of the stretch, she kicked into high gear and drew away. It was also a historic win for jockey Eddie Castro, who won his 2,000th career race.

Boisterous rated off the pace but ran down favored Desert Blanc to win the $150,000, Grade 3, Fort Marcy Stakes. The Shug McGaughey trainee was ridden to victory by Alan Garcia.

Jockey Junior Alvarado was suspended seven days for careless riding during the seventh race at Belmont on April 29th. Having waived his right to appeal, the suspension is reduced to three days and Alvarado will serve it on May 6, 9 and 10.

FIFTH RACE: This race gave the racing world an example of what is wrong with racing. Raffie’s Troika, making his first start for trainer Ricardo Creary, ducked in at the start and sent jockey Chris Creary crashing to the ground, landing on his back hard. Horse then ran off around the racetrack but was not injured while Creary was taken off on a stretcher. Now I am all for giving people opportunity. But, according to Equibase, Ricardo Creary’s career training record is 48 starts, no wins, no places and two show finishes. In his last 22 starts, Creary trainees have not finished better than fifth, with all those horses beaten double digit lengths. The total beaten lengths in 664 3/4. Now I ask, how does this man have a license to train horses and how does he have stalls at Aqueduct? If he has training ability, go somewhere and prove it, but he should not be trying to do it here on the NYRA circuit with the record and stock he has presently.
